Aster alpinus Goliath. The Goliath is a low clumping early blooming perennial, forming a low carpet of bright green leaves. From there come daisy shaped flowers sitting above on branching stems. The blooming period of these large soft blue hued flowers is late spring to early summer. After blooming, large seed heads will form. The Goliath is drought tolerant and easy to care for and will be an attractive addition to your space. Although it is not long lived, it will self seed and produce new plants from season to season if you so desire. To further keep the plant healthy, it is advised to divide as needed to allow adequate air flow to prevent disease and help the plant stay uniform in size and color. Unlike other Asters that bloom in the fall, the Goliath blooms in late spring and is not recommended to plant in the south. It will look a bit off on proportion early on with the flower head looking too large for the plant. However with age it will cover itself with flowers. The easy-care Goliath is drought tolerant and does nicely as edging, cutting flowers, containers, rock gardens and borders. It attracts Hummingbirds, Butterflies and Bees.
