Cosmos Bipinnatus – Dwarf color mix will give you a variety of 2 – 4 inch saucer shaped daisy like blooms ranging in colors from pink, rose, crimson, and white. These plants also have a leaf shape that is fern-like. They have a blooming season that ranges from Summer to Fall, grow between 12 – 24 inches tall, do best in full sun, and once established, do not need a lot of water. They prefer well-draining soils, but it is important to note that these plants do not tolerate cold or wintery climates. These flowers will attract numerous pollinators to your garden such as Butterflies, Bees, and especially Birds, since the Cosmos seed is a popular food source for them. These plants are also resistant to Deer and Rabbits which is always a good thing since we don’t need those critters ruining your garden! Native to Mexico, these flowers do great as cut flowers, in containers, and also in beds and borders in the garden. They are also easy to grow and maintain which is great for the busy gardener. A little history behind this plant; Spanish conquistadors searching for gold discovered these flowers while on their journeys through Mexico. Priests gave the flowers their name “Cosmos”, which is a Greek word that means a harmonious whole, because of their neatly spaced petals. These flowers were often found in mission gardens. Cosmos flowers then made their way to England with Spanish ambassadors around the late 18 th century, and then made their way over to the United Stated the following century.
