Lobelia Tupa- Devil’s Tobacco– is a showy perennial that blooms from July to October. It is dramatic with large soft grey- green leaves and red cardinal shaped flowers. It is hardy and can grow in most soils as long as it is well drained. It attracts hummingbirds and would be in good in open fields, meadows or in flower beds. It is a sacred plant to the Mapuche of Chile because it has pharmacologically active chemicals. It is also used to treat nicotine addiction. So it’s not a surprise that it is native to Chile.
