Helianthus Annuus – Sunflower Black Oil is a sun loving plant that is branched and produces sunflower blossoms that range from 3 – 5 inches. Wild Sunflowers are important habitat plants. The sunflower shoots that are 3 – 4 inches, can be eaten as fresh garnish, and can also be added to salads and sandwiches. It should be harvested 3 – 4 inches or just before the first true leaves emerge. An interesting fact about sunflowers is that they were named for their habit of turning their faces towards the sun. They have an ancient history beginning with Native American tribes across North America. The seeds were used for oil, and the plant was also useful because it provided dye and medicinal ointment. Sunflowers were also widely used in gardens and for making cooking oil; then, the production of this heart-healthy oil became a major industry. These flowers will attract butterflies, bees, and birds to your garden while being resistant to deer and rabbits. They are great for cut flowers, in containers, beds, borders, and along fences. They are easy to grow and drought tolerant, which is always a good thing for the busy gardener. Sunflowers are also said to be the happiest of flowers and symbolize loyalty and constancy.
