Nepeta Cataria more commonly known as Catnip, is a plant that is loved by many cats, is a vigorous, perennial that forms a spreading clump of branched, erect stems that have fragrant, soft, oval to triangular, toothed leaves that are a gray-green color. They are topped with dense, long spikes of small white flowers that are spotted with violet. This plant is not very ornamental, but it does deserve a spot in the herb garden. This is a medicinal herb and is an excellent remedy for children who have feverish conditions, and also is known to alleviate colic. Catnip also can be used for making an herbal tea that is supposed to help reduce stress, induce sleep, promote fever/cold relief, comfort upset stomachs, and soothe sore throats. So Catnip isn’t only for cats, it has many beneficial aspects for humans too! It can also act as a repellant for certain insects including cockroaches and mosquitos. As a culinary herb, its fresh leaves that are a mint flavor, can be added to sauces, soups, vegetables, or pasta. To harvest Catnip, cut the stems to the ground and then hang them upside down in a well-aired place. When they are dry, remove the foliage and store in an airtight container. It has a blooming season that ranges from late Spring to Fall, can be grown in either full sun or partial shade in well-draining soil, and will grow between 24 – 36 inches tall, and is also drought tolerant. These showy flowers will attract pollinators to your garden such as Butterflies and Bees while being resistant to Deer and Rabbits. They do well in beds and borders in the garden, and are also low maintenance, easy to grow plants.

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
