Poppy - Papaver rhoeas - Mother of Pearl. Common name: field poppy. Mother of pearl poppies are a mix of cultivated corn poppies. The blooms are single or doubled in stunning gray, dusty pink, gray blues, blue grays, speckled white and more. These poppies, unlike most others, don't fare well in transplanting, so planting directly into the soil is best. Sir Cedric Morris, an English artist and gardener is responsible for breeding these uniquely colorful flowers. His desire was to bring forth a softer, more gentle color. It is said that gardening shaped his painting, and painting influenced his plant breeding. This is excellent for cut flowers, lasting well in water if the stem is seared at the ends. It is a self sower and most commonly used in cottage / informal gardens, flower borders and beds, wildflower meadows, butterfly and bee gardens and cut flowers.
