Poppy- Papaver somniferum- Hens and Chicks, a unique poppy cherished for its seed pod that gives its defining appearance resembling a plump mama hen surrounded by numerous baby chicks at the base. Not only are the seed pods a distinguishing feature, but its paper-thin bloom is also a center point. From Mid-Summer to early Fall, a beautiful sight brings awe to the garden, a bright yellow eye at the center circled by deep purple impressions all contained in a large fine purple or pink blossom. Also, a standout poppy in the garden due to its wonderful lettuce-like foliage. These have often been grown in areas of vegetable gardens for pollination due to the high concentration of Bees it draws. These have been grown for centuries as symbols for sleep and death, as well as fertility, because of all the little chicks around mama hen.
