Poppy Papaver Somniferum Summer Blaze seed orange poppy flowers

Poppy - Papaver Somniferum - Summer Blaze also known as the Opium Poppy, has large papery flowers that come in shades of red, mauve, and pink that rise atop gray-green leaves. If you add this plant to your garden, this is a great way to make a dazzling splash in an open spot! A great feature of this plant is that when the petals have fallen, the dried seed-heads are attractive, so they can be collected on their long stems for dried arrangements. This plant will reseed and spread easily in southern gardens. They have a blooming season that ranges from June – July, grows best in full sun and will grow between 24 – 31 inches tall. These showy flowers that are native to Europe will attract Bees to your garden while being resistant to Deer and Rabbits. Another characteristic of this plant is that it is low maintenance, which every busy gardener can appreciate! The seed pods produce nodding flower heads. Once the petals drop, the big pods will swell as their seeds mature to harvest, then when the seeds dry, you can use them for your culinary needs or can store them for use next year. If you are planning on eating the  seeds, make sure to cook them otherwise if eaten raw, they can cause a mild upset stomach. Toasted poppy seeds’ nutty flavor will enhance breads that are sweet and savory, are great in cakes and cookies, and are even tasty in salad dressings.

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike!  There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!

SEED GERMINATION TIP!!!!!!!

ONLY GERMINATE A SMALL PORTION AT A TIME.

DON'T PUT ALL YOUR MONKEYS IN A BARREL.

Good Luck and Happy Planting!!!!
