Verbascum phoeniceum - Rosetta. Aka oriental mullein, old man’s flannel, beggars blanket. Rosette forming perennial with wrinkled, soft, hairy dark green basal leaves. From there, grow tall erect statue-like stems, holding spikes of showy dainty-looking carmine pink flowers with golden centers. Blooming from the bottom upwards, it will give continuous blooms for weeks. They require no special care and are not “needy” of special attention or complicated soil mixtures. This plant is known for its remarkable ability to produce multitudes of seeds and reproduce very fast and easily. It is important to deadhead or it will invade your garden. It's a very easy plant to grow. Just water normally in well-drained soil, remove spent flowers, and that's it! No fuss, no muss. Just sit back and watch the second round of blooms arrive, since this is a first-year bloomer (when planted in the suggested time). Since it is such a seeding wonder, it is great to plant a mass meadow. Other common areas are along borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens and flowerpots. The plant is drought tolerant once established and likes to have a permanent spot to call home. Attracts pollinators to come and frequent the flowers.
**Fun fact: a long time ago in England, the poor people would line their shoes with the leaves of this plant to protect their feet from cold and dampness, and keep in some warmth.
