Lobelia siphilitica-Great Blue Lobelia. Clump forming herbaceous perennial, blooming late July to October. Showy with little to no branching, producing erect stems with densely packed tubular brilliant lavender-blue flowers on the top of the stem. Toothed lance-shaped clusters of leafy bracts on leafy stems bloom into flowers with 2 lips. The upper with 2 segments and the lower is split into 3 larger segments that are larger and protruding parts. The plant is tap rooted and robust with stems rising from a crown at ground level. When blooming is at an end, there will be small round sacks of tiny seeds on the stalk to forward the next generation of plants. It is a self sower but not aggressive. Native to eastern and central Canada and U.S. The unfortunate species name, siphilitica, is based on the fact that it was a supposed cure for syphilis.
