Allium schoenoprasum – Polyvert also known as Chive Seed is a perennial that is a commonly known culinary herb that has large sized leaves that are upright, robust, and have very good uniformity and vigorous growth. They have pretty lilac-colored flowers and will bloom between May to August. These are great to use in salads and can be used for other culinary requirements too. They can be grown in either full sun or partial shade in a fairly rich soil that is high in humus and is well-draining and will grow between 12 – 18 inches tall. These flowers will attract pollinators to your garden such as Butterflies and Bees while being resistant to Deer and Rabbits. These grow well in containers. Harvest: The individual leaves may be harvested once the plants are established. It’s recommended to harvest the leaves before flowering begins. The leaves can be harvested 3 – 4 times per year, make sure to cut at ground level. It’s nice because the leaves can be used either fresh or dried. To dry them, cut bundles into ¼ - ½ inch lengths, and then spread one layer on a screen allowing for air circulation. Then place in a well-ventilated location that is out of direct sunlight, and make sure to stir periodically while they are drying.
