Dianthus barbatus - Oeschberg whose common names are Sweet William, Sweet John, and Dianthus. The Dianthus originated in Europe and south Asia before bringing it to the US. Its sweet nectar attracts butterflies, moths and bees. The deep purple/violet color is irresistible and is a favorite in flower arrangements: even wedding bouquets of royalty! Along with its beauty it is also edible. Many chefs utilize the flowers as a garnish in salads, cakes, deserts, beverages, and signature dishes. The plants grow well in gardens and fabulous in flower planters. They will reseed themselves if you so desire or can deadhead to have continuous blooms through the season. It's very important to plant them in well-drained soil and not over-water. They are also susceptible to extreme heat and cold, thus favoring a temperate climate.
