Kniphofia rooperi also commonly known as the Red Hot Poker, is one of the most distinctive Kniphofias with its egg-shaped, large flowers that are a bright red fading to yellow, and held over foliage that is broad and high. The flowers change color as they mature, they display the deepest shades in buds and fade as the flower opens, which results in a bicolor look. The flowering scapes rise atop tufted clumps of arching, long, angled, dark green leaves. They have a blooming season that lasts from late summer to fall, grow best in full sun in sandy soil enriched with humus, but moist, well-draining soils will do, and they will grow up to 4 feet tall.
