Playtcodon grandiflorus - Hakone Blue – This perennial is a double-blossomed balloon flower that is blue to purple in color. It is a two-layered, star-shaped flower that emerges from swollen balloon-like buds. It blooms from early summer to fall, can be grown in either full sun or partial shade, thrives in well-drained soils, and will grow up to 2 feet tall. They are also drought tolerant. Butterflies love these showy flowers as well as hummingbirds and bees. They are deer and rabbit resistant. They make great cut flowers. As far as germination - start seeds indoors with very little topsoil. The name comes from the Greek word Platyo meaning broad and Kodon meaning bell.
