Penstemon x mexicali - Sunburst Amethyst. Aka: Mexican beardtongue. This is another beauty in the penstemon family. Erect stems coming up out of waxy green foliage that stays green throughout the heat. The tubular shaped flowers present with a rich purple hue and deep veined white throat. Easy to grow and will do well in a variety of soil types. Bloom time is early summer to later summer and does well in dry climates once established. It is drought resistant, and it's also safe to plant in ocean coastal areas because it is salt tolerant. To keep the plant more compact, cut back when it reaches about 12”. It will also self-sow, and can be divided every 3-4 years to prevent diseases and promote airflow to ensure healthy plants. Take care not to over- water. Commonly used for cutting flowers and in borders. Attracts Hummingbirds, Butterflies and Bees as well as other pollinators.
