Penstemon hirsutus var Pygmaeus. Aka Dwarf hairy beardtongue. This plant, native to North America is a dwarf form of the species and is easier to grow. It will form a low mat or mound of dark green leathery leaves with tubular flowers that are lavender on the outside and white on the inside, growing on upright stems. The flowers are quite showy and will definitely bring lots of attention to where you choose to plant them. Blooming period is in summer and during the winter the foliage turns to bronze-red. It is drought tolerant once established. Spent flowers should be pruned after blooming to ensure the health of the plant.
