Penstemon digitalis - Husker Red is a white flowered penstemon on unusual foliage as in Spring the leaves grow a wine red color and as they mature they begin to turn a dark green by Summer.. Genus name comes from the Greek words penta meaning five and stemon meaning stamen since each flower has five stamens. This Missouri native does well in moist Winters and humid Summers, unlike many penstemon. It was created at the University of Nebraska and named after the school colors. Highly attractive to all pollinators this will bring you Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees to visit. Also, it is not attractive to deer and rabbit. This variety is quite drought tolerant as well. In Springtime this plant shows off with the lovely foliage in red and will fit right in for color in Spring and flowers in Summer.
