Penstemon Cobaea – Showy Beardtongue is an eye-catching plant you will want to add to your garden. It is clump-forming and has loose terminal panicles, with colors ranging from white to violet to deep purple. The tubular flowers are atop erect, rigid stems. These flowers are somewhat larger than most other penstemons and have clasping lance-shaped upper leaves. The genus name comes from the Greek words penta which means five and stemon which means stamen, in reference to each of the flowers having five stamens; four of the stamens are fertile and one is sterile. This plant is commonly called beardtongue because the sterile stamen has a tuft of small hairs. This plant will grow up to 24 inches tall and has a blooming season ranging from late spring to early summer. These drought tolerant plants do best in full sun, however they can tolerate partial shade. It will attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to your garden while being resistant to deer and rabbits. These make great cut flowers, so be sure to choose stems with flowers that have just opened. They also do well in sunny borders and in rock gardens. Another great feature about this plant is that its low maintenance, which is always great for the
busy gardener. This is also a larval plant for several checkerspot butterflies.

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
