Dicentra cucullaria – Dutchman’s Bleeding Heart also known as Dutchman’s Breeches, is a bushy, compact Perennial that forms a clump of feathery, finely cut, blue-green leaves, that have arching stems that are studded with white flowers with yellow tips and are pantaloon-shaped. They are borne in an elegant row along stems that are leafless, and the blossoms dangle like porcelain earrings above the foliage. These showy flowers have a blooming season that lasts from mid to late Spring, are easily grown in humus-rich, fertile, moist, well-draining soils, and thrive in part shade however, full shade is tolerant but be aware that too much shade will result in few flowers. They are deer and rabbit resistant, and do well in beds and borders, are great for edging, and can act as a groundcover. These don’t have any serious pest or disease issues but keep a lookout for snails and slugs. A great feature of these plants is that they are low maintenance, making these the perfect flowers for the busy gardener! You don’t want to miss out on this plant find, it will surely add a nice touch to any garden!
