Euphorbia corollata flowering spurge. The spurge is the product of a large and diverse family of flowering plants, with a substantial percentage of them having medicinal properties. From June to August the erect stems that grow in a whorling circular pattern, yield flowers with five white petals, a yellow center, and a touch of green in the middle of that. The plant has a very rich nectar that is popular with a multitude of insects and different kinds of birds, such as: the wild turkey, horned lark, and mourning dove. It also has the pleasure of attracting a VIP; the endangered butterfly, Karner Blue. This perennial plant will thrive in almost any soil type, and be disease free, as long as the soil is well drained. There are no worries about animals because the leaves contain a toxic white sap that will cause sickness or even death if too much is ingested. Humans are cautioned to wear gloves when handling the plant because the toxic white milky sap can cause skin irritation, and if ingested, it may cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The flowering spurge has a history of medicinal uses for making laxatives among others, but it is poisonous in large doses.
