Lavandula angustifolia – Hidcote Superior is a herbaceous perennial that is part of the Lamiaceae family. It is a compact English lavender cultivar that has fragrant deep blue-purple flowers with narrow, fragrant gray-green leaves. It has a blooming season that lasts from June to October, grows best in full sun in dry to medium moisture, well-draining, alkaline soils, and will grow between 13-16 inches tall. They are also drought tolerant, which is always nice. It does prefer light, sandy soil with somewhat low fertility. It is important to note that well-drained soils are required in the winter and to have proper protective snow covers for these plants otherwise they may not survive. This plant is also sensitive to high summer humidity, so it is also recommended to consider using rock instead of mulch. The genus name comes from the Latin word lavo, which means “I wash” in reference to a former use of the plant as a fragrant wash. These showy flowers will attract pollinators to your gardens such as butterflies and bees. They make great cut flowers, do well in dried floral arrangements, borders, rock, and herb gardens. Don’t miss out on this flower seed find, they will give you colorful flowers that will add a nice pop of color to any garden!
