Verbena Hastata - American Blue Vervain. This showy very unique flower with the generic name “verbena” is latin for “sacred plant”. In early folklore it was believed that drinking the vervain tea would ward off vampires because of the spear-shaped lanceolate leaves. It is commonly called swamp verbena because of its high tolerance for wet soggy soil. Verbena hastata is an upright slender perennial with numerous stems and short rhizomes. The unusual stens are square and green or reddish with white hairs. This plant can be found in moist thickets, creeks, ponds, ditches, river edges and more areas similar to these....even mucky soil and temporary standing water. The plant is basically resistant to pests. Since the plant is an avid self sower, deadheading may be necessary. Popular planting sites are wildlife gardens, wet meadows, or a water garden border. Other uses include low maintenance gardens, rain gardens, perennial borders, cottage gardens and deer resistant plantings. Attracts honeybees, beneficial wasps, small butterflies, skippers, moths, and pollinating flies. Caterpillars of the verbena noth and buckeye butterflies feed on the leaves. Cardinals, juncos and sparrows love the seeds.
