Astrantia major Hybrid Rosensinfonie. Masterwort is the creation of the German breeding program and was created in 1982. They have created a very hardy long flowering hybrid. This plant is an upright herbaceous clump forming perennial with mid green, deep-lobed leaves. The flowers have a bit of a metallic sheen to them. It prefers a damp partially shaded area the most. In the summer the erect branching stems produce umbles of small dark pink flowers that are surrounded by lance-shaped pink bracts. This plant does well when sheltered from heavy wind. It does attract butterflies and bees. They also are great for cut flowers or dried flowers. Resistant to deer and rabbit. It may self seed but will not produce flowers true to type. Prune flower stems when they turn brown to bring a second flush of flowers. Deadhead before seeds are ripe to eliminate self seeding. In the spring it is advisable to divide the plants. They don’t like to be disturbed and it may take a little time for it to reestablish in its new home. Commonly used for beds, borders, coastal, cottage and informal gardens, drying, and lower arrangements.
