Astrantia Maxima. Aka maxima, large Masterwort. Known for its long blooming seasons, this “Plant of Merit” is showy and easy to care for. It is a large herbaceous clumping plant that will pleasure you with continuous blooming from late spring to early fall. Atop its erect wiry stems, are tons of tiny flowers crowded in a dome shaped flower with flashy papery bracts. The flowers are very unique and beautiful, looking like stars with a pin cushion in the center. Easily separated in spring and are excellent when used as filler plants. Deadheading will keep the blooming coming as long as they are in their “happy place”. The flowers bloom into beautiful hues of soft pink. Astrantia Maxima attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees as well as other beneficial insects and birds. The climate of choice for this perennial plant is cool summer climates, and does not like hot, dry or humid climates. The plant will self sow and spread but is easily held back. Diseases and pests will be non-existent with proper care. Even though it is tolerant to wet soil, over watering will cause root rot and possibly mildew. The flowers are very popular for cutting, drying and pressing, and are an excellent choice for city and courtyards, coastal gardens, informal and cottage gardens; they also make a beautiful statement in mixed containers and tubs.

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
SEED GERMINATION TIP!!!!!!!
ONLY GERMINATE A SMALL PORTION AT A TIME.
DON'T PUT ALL YOUR MONKEYS IN A BARREL.
Good Luck and Happy Planting!!!!
