Verbascum Thapsus

Verbascum Thapsus. Aka Great mullein, greater mullein, common mullein. This is a biennial herb with a rosette of thick leaves on a tall erect stem, packed densely with spikes of dainty small flowers. The flowers are bright yellow, each having five petals and bloom from the bottom up, in a spiral direction which will give constant blooms for weeks. Each individual flower will open before dawn and close by midafternoon. If the pollinators are not successful in their cross pollinating job, the plant is autogamous and will self-pollinate. It is native to N. Africa, and western and Central Asia. Fortunately it didn’t stay there, and is now growing in abundance worldwide. It can be seen growing wild in old fields, along the roadsides, prairies, forests and disturbed areas. The plant is edible with herbal medicinal uses to treat migraines, diarrhea, inflammatory diseases, asthma, coughing spasms, sinus problems, colic, and earaches. Tea made from the flowers is said to have a sedative soothing effect. This plant is notorious for its extraordinary ability to produce seeds, and will pop up everywhere if the spent flowers are not cut back in time. It is not picky about soil and is very easy to grow.

**fun fact: The seeds are said to survive just about any climate or conditions, and one plant can produce 100,000 to 200,000 seeds in ONE YEAR !! Scientists have actually found seeds from around 300 AD that can still be planted and will grow! This is truly an amazing plant. Popular places to plant are to form mass meadows, borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and flower pots.

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike!  There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!

SEED GERMINATION TIP!!!!!!!

ONLY GERMINATE A SMALL PORTION AT A TIME.

DON'T PUT ALL YOUR MONKEYS IN A BARREL.

Good Luck and Happy Planting!!!!
