Verbena Stricta - Hoary Vervain

Verbena stricta – Hoary Vervain is a plant that grows in a narrow clump and features blue-purpleflowers in narrow, upright pencil-like panicles. The flowers are densely packed on the panicles, but they bloom only a few at a time from the bottom up. The flowers will bloom from May to September, but they will primarily bloom in the summer. The flowers are borne on ovate, coarsely toothed, stalkless leaves that are covered with white hairs, and the foliage has a gray-green appearance. These plants will grow between 2 – 4 feet tall and do best in full sun with medium-dry soil and are also drought tolerant. These showy flowers will attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and birds to your garden while being resistant to deer and rabbits. An interesting fact about this plant is that the gray-green leaves that are fuzzy on both sides, are the larval host for the Common Buckeye Butterfly. These plants are great for wild or native plant gardens and borders. They are also low maintenance, which is always good for the busy gardener.
