Verbena rigida - Slender Vervain Aka: purple verbena, rigid verbena, sandpaper verbena, slender verbena, prairie verbena, stiff verbena, upright verbena. This many-named plant is a herbaceous semi-shrub perennial that can be an annual in colder climates. It is compact and upright with bushy ridged green leaves that are not pleasant to touch. Clusters of fragrant tiny flowers resembling miniature daisies, burst from the branching stems touting their rich purple color. Attracts Hummingbirds, Butterflies, Bees, Bumblebees, Songbirds, and other beneficial pollinators. It is a fast grower that is easy to maintain, blooming from summer to late fall. In warmer winter climates it may possibly into the winter months. It is a self sower, hardy, vigorous and spreads by creeping underground bringing blooms year after year and is a winner at attracting pollinators to the rich nectar. In England it is called Hardy Garden Verbena where it was given the Award of Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. .
