Dianthus Chinensis - Chinese Pink merry-go-round. Common names are: Chinese pink, Indian pink, and carnation. Oddly, the word “pink” has nothing to do with the color. It is a description of the serrated edges having the appearance of being cut with “pinking shears”. The color on these flowers is very intense white with a red ring which is just a beautiful site when the plant blooms multiple flowers. Like others in their family they do well in soil with good drainage. They however differ in the way they are sensitive to drought and frost, faring better in temperate climates. They are excellent border flowers, in planting boxes, and beds. They are commonly used as ornamental decor. The Chinese herbalists have been using them for over 2,000 years in traditional Chinese medicine. Even though they can be used to steep for tea with their clove-like taste, they are poisonous if eaten directly, even lethal. You can deadhead these plants if you choose to or collect the numerous seeds for future planting. The plant is also commonly used for cut flowers.

It is used externally to treat skin inflammations and swellings. The old leaves are crushed and used for clearing the eyesight. The plants are harvested just before the flowers open and are dried for later use.
I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike! There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
