Malva alcea -  var. Fastigiata is a herbaceous perennial that is part of the Malvaceae family. What’s interesting is the ‘Fastigiata’ is the most popular cultivar of the species. It is clump-forming and features dainty pink hollyhock-like flowers that are 2 inches in diameter, with five notched petals. These showy flowers rise atop light green, deeply lobed foliage. They have a blooming season that lasts from June to September, can be grown in either full sun or partial shade in medium moisture, well-draining soils, will grow between 2 – 4 feet tall, and also tolerates some drought. Be sure to remove the spent flowers to help encourage additional flowering. These flowers do appreciate a site that is protected from strong winds. Even though they are short-lived, they may freely self-seed in the garden if the spent flowers aren’t deadheaded.
