Verbascum phoeniceum - Wild form. This is a hardy herbaceous perennial with an erect habit that will flower the first year in a satisfactory environment. Starting with dark green crinkled basal leaves that sprout tall slender stems with simple slender leaves arranged alternately. Stacked narrowly on a thick spike comes a multitude of showy spires of saucer shaped purple, pink or white flowers with long hairy yellowish-gold stamens. Bloom time is from June to August, and this easy to grow self sower will easily give a second flush in proper conditions by removing the center flower stalk after the first bloom. Because of this plant's height, it is advised to place it in a sheltered spot to protect it from high wind and in well drained dry-like soil. Too much moisture will cause the plant to flop. This plant is also known to have many medicinal properties, being used as a tea for pulmonary ailments, inflammation, intestinal problems and mild skin conditions. It is also a good source of magnesium, sulfur, and iron.
