Verbascum Phoeniceum - Flush of White

Verbascum phoeniceum - Flush of White. Aka: mullein, beggars blanket, old man's flannel, white bride. Showy is an understatement for these hardy perennials. Large beautiful pure white open-faced flowers with long hairy yellow stamens, sitting on 3 foot tall stems hovering over a thick hairy silver-gray rosette of leaves is surely an eye catcher. This beauty will bloom the first year from May to July if sown early enough, but it's also a self sower if not deadheaded. It's a gorgeous plant that does well in poor soil and tolerates heat, deer and drought. Hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators will frequent. This Verbascum has medicinal properties when the leaves are cooked in water to brew teas, but it will be toxic if used in excess. I read In England, the very poor used to put the thick leaves into their shoes for warmth.
