Verbascum Olympicum

Verbascum olympicum adds some drama to the landscape and is also known as Olympic Mullein. It is a short-lived perennial that forms tall flowering spikes that are smothered with golden yellow blossoms and 1 inch across. The flower stalks rise from a wide, low-growing, rosette of felted leaves that are a silvery-gray color and reach up to 1 foot. This plant is easy to please and hardy and is regarded as one of the most desirable plants of the genus. Even though this plant tends to be short lived, seeds are produced in profusion and are scattered nearby. It blooms all throughout the Summer, grows best in full sun in well-drained soil, will grow quite tall between 6 – 10 feet and is also drought tolerant. These showy flowers will attract pollinators to your garden such as Butterflies, Bees, and Birds while being resistant to Deer and Rabbits. It is native to Southern Greece, and the Olympus mountains in Turkey, and is a great cut flower, and does well in beds and borders in the garden. This is also a low maintenance plant, which is always a good thing for the busy gardener.
