Verbascum densiflorum Dense flower Mullein. This is a short lived semi-evergreen perennial that produces a rosette of leaves densely covered with grayish-yellow hairs. Erect stalks reaching up to a stature 5 feet tall grow tons of blossoms in bright yellow and occasionally white flowers that bloom early summer to late summer. The flowers are saucer shaped and are usually yellow or white but can also present as purple or brownish-red. The individual flowers are numerous but short lived, but the multitude of buds keep the plant blooming. It is a wonderful plant for your bees, and they will visit it daily in bloom, bees are something we should all try to help in their survival since they give more than they get! The plant is native to Europe and has adapted to the United States The plants have adapted well to rock gardens, gravel and cottage gardens and naturalized areas. It is a self sower but doesn’t become overbearing and is to care for. Although the above traits are common, they are not set in stone. You may get a surprise due to pollination from an anonymous cultivator.
